Context

HMA, one of the largest for-profit hospital chains in the country, believed medication errors could drop and outcomes could improve if medication management moved from stationary “computers on wheels” into a nurse's hand. That meant designing for the Five Rights of medication administration — patient, drug, dose, route, time — on real hospital-floor hardware, not in a controlled demo.

What I Did

  • Shadowed nurses directly on hospital floors to understand what it actually takes to administer a medication safely, and how a mobile app could capture and validate each of the Five Rights.
  • Measured real hardware performance limitations — mobile battery drain, barcode-scanner lag — and defined hardware solutions to work around them.
  • Worked directly with HMA's HIPAA compliance team to translate patient-safety and regulatory requirements into product design from day one.
  • Developed training materials and a phased rollout plan across dozens of hospitals, with feedback loops built in from the start.
  • Contributed to a broader innovation lab and enterprise architecture practice that shipped eight clinical, business, IP, and HR applications, unlocking low-cost deployments on Chromebooks, iPads, and physicians' personal devices.
